Moderna gets WHO nod for emergency use

  • The World Health Organisation has given the approval for emergency use of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.
  • The US Food and Drug Administration approved the Moderna vaccine on 18 December 2020.
  • It has also received marketing authorisation by the European Medicines Agency.
  • The other vaccines listed for emergency use by WHO are Pfizer BioNTech; AstraZeneca; Serum Institute of India; and Janssen.

 GST on imported oxygen concentrators slashed

  • The Finance Ministry has cut the Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST) on import of oxygen concentrators for personal use to 12 per cent from 28 per cent earlier.
  • The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) announced the decision to cut IGST on 1 May 2021.
  • This reduced IGST rate for imports of concentrator for personal use shall be applicable up to the 30 June 2021.

 Journalists: A frontline Covid warriors

  • Odisha gov has declared the working professionals journalists of the state as 'frontline Covid warriors'.
  • Prior to this, Uttarakhand had declared journalists and representatives of media organisations as frontline workers.
  • Odisha has also announced an ex gratia of ₹15 lakh for the next of kin of journalists who die of Covid-19 while performing their duty.

Zerodha to provide fully equipped ambulances

  • The fintech unicorn Zerodha aims to provide ambulances and a step-down hospital.
  • The fully equipped ambulance will likely be obtainable in the cities of Mumbai and Bengaluru.
  • According to Zerodha, each ambulance is equipped with a ventilator, critical care equipment, medication, a nurse, and a paramedic.
